why we built this
In 2000, a few researchers set up two jam-tasting tables at a grocery store. One had 24 flavors. The other had 6. The big table drew more foot traffic — who wouldn't want more options? — but the smaller table had happier customers.
Faced with so many options, shoppers at the big table often left without choosing anything. And when they did choose, they weren't satisfied, because they kept wondering whether the jam they chose was the best of those 24.
In other words, the small-table people were more likely to go home with a jam they liked, and more satisfied with the jams they chose.
